Facade Pieces Go Up at UIC’s Computer Design Research and Learning Center in Little Italy

The University of Illinois Chicago’s new computer science building at 900 W Taylor Street in Little Italy is now undergoing facade installation. The five-story structure, called the Computer Design Research and Learning Center, is under construction and will connect to UIC’s existing Science and Engineering Labs building. Once completed, the center will add 135,000 square feet of new programming to support the university’s growing computer science program.

Updated details have been revealed for the mixed-use development at 1300 W Lake Street in the West Loop. Located on the northwest corner with W Lake Street and replacing an existing two-story commercial building, plans for the nearly block-long structure were revealed in March with the Committee on Design reviewing its plans soon thereafter. Now developer Loukas Development has applied for rezoning for the upcoming bKL Architecture-designed project.

Final exterior construction can be seen at the site of the mixed-use 1606 S Ashland Avenue in Pilsen, where the developer 1600 Pilsen LLC has built 24 new rental units and 4,675 square feet of retail. The four-story, roughly 50,000-square-foot structure will replace a former masonry low-rise building, and is located across the street from the high-profile residential conversion of 1600 S Laflin Street, which was recently approved by city council.
