In this fourth installment of our “Lost Legends” series, we explore the Chicago and North Western Station in West Loop Gate, a Renaissance Revival-style structure that once served as an architectural icon in the heart of the city. Originally designed by architects Frost and Granger, the station held an extraordinary legacy until it was ultimately demolished in 1984 to clear the path for the Citicorp Center Tower.
A pair of concrete cores can be seen topped out along Roosevelt Avenue in the Illinois Medical District, a development known as “The Foglia Residences” is currently undergoing construction. This nine-story mixed-use construction at 1134 S Wood Street is a collaboration between the Chicago Lighthouse (which is a non-profit serving the blind, visually impaired, disabled, and veterans since 1906), Brinshore Development, and Landon Bone Baker Architects.
Glass installation is nearing completion for the topped-out, 21-story mixed-use development located at 741 N Wells Street in River North. This 201,000-square-foot project developed by Vista Property will comprise of 168 residential units atop multiple retail stores on the ground floor. This commercial component will integrate with an existing two-story masonry building to the north.
Initial details have been revealed for the mixed-use development at 4735 N Western Avenue in Lincoln Square. Located just south of the intersection with W Lawrence Avenue and a few steps north of the CTA Brown Line Western station, the new proposal will redevelop the existing two-story structure that caught fire a few years ago. Now developer Rany Management is working with local firm Kennedy Mann Architects on the new concept.
A new one-story retail building is now cleared for construction at 7100 S Ashland Avenue in West Englewood, replacing a building that was destroyed by fire. The project, located at the corner of Ashland & 71st, is expected to cost $300,000 according to the recently issued permit. The occupying owner is filed under Abas Achmad, while the architect of record is Nick Scarlatis & Associates.
