The upcoming Woodlawn Central development has taken another step forward as it has now secured City Council approval. The multi-building proposal has been in the works for a few years and has seen refinement since it was initially introduced over four years ago. Efforts for the project have been led by the Apostolic Church of God, which owns the multiple parcels.v
A local developer that’s been busy on the South Side added three more permits to their Woodlawn collection of three-flat builds last week. Using the entity of Maryland Flats LLC, Kasper Development LLC scored permission for three-unit residences at 6549, 6551. and 6553 South Maryland Avenue on June 25, each including reported costs or $450,000. All show application start dates of May 4, spending 52 days apiece in the data portal.
The Chicago Plan Commission has approved the multi-phase Woodlawn Central development centered around the intersections of East 63rd Street and South Dorchester Avenue. The approval comes after more than four years of planning by the Apostolic Church of God, which is behind the proposal and occupies a large portion of the property.
The Chicago City Council has approved plans for an upcoming affordable senior housing building at 6151 South University Avenue in Woodlawn. Located on the corner with East 62nd Street, the proposal was revealed earlier this year as part of a redevelopment of multiple vacant lots owned by Woodlawn Baptist Church.
A two-unit building at 6508 South Evans Avenue in Woodlawn demolished more than a decade ago has now been permitted for a two-flat replacement. The new permit, which had been pending in the Chicago Data Portal since September 2024, came through on March 3 with a reported cost of $450,000.
