An official groundbreaking has been held for the first phase of the upcoming Woodlawn Central development at roughly 6309 South Dorchester Avenue. Initially announced in 2022, the greater multi-lot proposal will gradually replace multiple surface parking lots surrounding the Apostolic Church of God, who owns the property and is behind the project.
A three-flat was permitted for construction on July 8 to fill a vacant lot at 6514 South Vernon Avenue on the western edge of Woodlawn. A private developer applied for the permit on March 20, and it came through with a reported cost of $450,000.
The upcoming Woodlawn Central development has taken another step forward as it has now secured City Council approval. The multi-building proposal has been in the works for a few years and has seen refinement since it was initially introduced over four years ago. Efforts for the project have been led by the Apostolic Church of God, which owns the multiple parcels.v
A local developer that’s been busy on the South Side added three more permits to their Woodlawn collection of three-flat builds last week. Using the entity of Maryland Flats LLC, Kasper Development LLC scored permission for three-unit residences at 6549, 6551. and 6553 South Maryland Avenue on June 25, each including reported costs or $450,000. All show application start dates of May 4, spending 52 days apiece in the data portal.
The Chicago Plan Commission has approved the multi-phase Woodlawn Central development centered around the intersections of East 63rd Street and South Dorchester Avenue. The approval comes after more than four years of planning by the Apostolic Church of God, which is behind the proposal and occupies a large portion of the property.
