Two new construction permits were issued on March 26 by the City of Chicago allowing construction to begin on a pair of two-flats in the Woodlawn neighborhood. Permissions were granted to developer and general contractor McNamara Builders to erect two-story with basements, two-unit buildings at 6517 and 6519 South Langley Avenue. The permits show an application date of June 17, 2024, and a reported construction cost of $400,000 for each building.

Charles Schwartz is named as the architect of record. The buildings will have open rear decks, and each lot will have a two-car garage built off the alley at the back of the properties. These are the third and fourth two-unit buildings permitted for McNamara Builders on this long-vacant lot, with permits issued in July and September of last year for 6515 and 6513 South Langley. A fifth building was permitted for another developer at 6511 South Langley on October 17, 2024.

It’s exciting to see the rate that Woodlawn’s empty lots are filling in!
I’d like to see the neighborhood once again without all the vacant lots also shopping on 63rd Street from Cottage Grove to South Park Blvd. Bring it back again!
Great to see building activity happening in this once vital area. I hope further such developmenfs will continue, as this area has real potential to once again be the success it was, decades ago.
