A new construction permit has been issued for a two-story athletic center located at 6121 South Stony Island Avenue in Woodlawn. The permit, which is currently in an active status with fees due, was applied for on May 24 and issued on September 26, with a total processing time of 125 days. The athletic center is a component of the broader Obama Presidential Center development.
Work is set to commence for the residential conversion of the former Charles Earle Elementary School at 6121 S Hermitage Avenue in West Englewood. Sitting on the corner with W 61st Street, the school closed in 2013 with plans for its conversion dating back to 2017. Since then, Wisconsin-based developer Gorman & Co. has been working towards this date.
Construction is underway for a new apartment building at 6350 North Glenwood Avenue in Edgewater. The development takes the place of the former Uncommon Ground restaurant at 1401 West Devon Avenue, which was demolished this summer after receiving a demo permit in April of this year. When we dropped by the site in August, we found demo work all but completed, and the crew on site told us construction would begin immediately thereafter. And true to their word, a lot of progress has already been made.

Revised plans have been revealed for the mixed-use expansion of the Black Ensemble Theater (BE) at 4427 N Clark Street in Uptown. Dubbed ‘The Free To BE Village’, the multi-structure development was originally revealed last year and will rise across the street from the current home of the Black Ensemble Theater.
