This year’s most endangered buildings list has been announced by Preservation Chicago featuring influential structures across the city. In its 21st year, the list covers multiple buildings that are at risk for demolition which have contributed to the city’s architectural and cultural legacy. The Chicago City Council has granted final approval for the mixed-use development at 415 N Sangamon Street in West Loop’s Fulton Market, following February’s approval by the Chicago Plan Commission. Situated at the northeast corner of the intersection with W Kinzie Street, the project will showcase a green design and high-tech facade. Fortem Voluntas Partners, the developer behind the proposal, is forging ahead with this angular tower, which was designed by the Chicago-based firm Eckenhoff Saunders Architects.
A construction permit has been granted for the Chicago Fire soccer team’s new training center in the Near West Side. Situated within the CHA’s Roosevelt Square development plan, the 23.3-acre location is generally surrounded by W Roosevelt Road, S Ashland Avenue, W 14th Street, and S Loomis Street. Previously, the site was home to parts of CHA’s ABLA Homes.
Construction on Wendelin Park (formerly known as The Shops at Big Deahl) Phase 2 in Near North Side is nearing its final stages, as Structured Development’s four-building, $250 million project wraps up exterior facade and landscape work. The first phase of the GREC Architects-designed masterplan, a three-story climbing gym called Movement Lincoln Park, is located at the easternmost end of the property. Meanwhile, this nearly-complete second phase is comprised of a small park and three buildings standing 27, 10, and five stories tall.
Updated details have been revealed for the mixed-use development at 4343-4357 N Richmond Street in Irving Park. Located on the southeast corner with W Montrose Avenue a few blocks west from Horner Park, the multiple-building proposal replaces the previous Twisted Hippo structure which burned down in February 2022. Now developer Alan Candea is working with local firm Compass Architecture on their design after receiving community feedback on an earlier iteration.
