Structural steel is rising into shape for the AbbVie Foundation Cancer Pavilion at the University of Chicago in Hyde Park. General contractor Turner Construction has the steel up to the underside of the fourth and fifth levels as it begins to wrap around the twin concrete cores.
A major donation and name has been announced for the upcoming cancer center within the University of Chicago at 5654 S Drexel Avenue in Hyde Park. Sitting on the corner with E 57th Street, construction is quickly progressing on the state’s first facility dedicated to reshaping cancer care led by the university itself along with local firm CannonDesign.
Chicago has eight working tower cranes across the city as the month of June begins. They’re located as far south as the 6600-block of S Dr Martin Luther King Drive in Woodlawn, but barely reach north of the Chicago River, with the furthest northern crane working in the 400-block of N Jean-Baptiste Pointe DuSable Lake Shore Drive.
Metal cladding and glass curtain wall continue their progress at Hyde Park Labs, Phase II of the Harper Court development project in Hyde Park. The metal-and-glass cladding, which shrouds the parking levels of the 13-story building, is mostly complete. The glazing has begun above those parking floors, with work happening now on the second level of glass.
The concrete core is rising from the foundation at the University of Chicago’s state-of-the-art Cancer Center on its Hyde Park campus. The University and general contractor Turner Construction received a foundation permit on December 12 of last year. The “core and shell” permit issued May 9 of this year authorized them to build the core seen in the photos, which will rise nine stories in total, including one below grade.
