A major donation and name has been announced for the upcoming cancer center within the University of Chicago at 5654 S Drexel Avenue in Hyde Park. Sitting on the corner with E 57th Street, construction is quickly progressing on the state’s first facility dedicated to reshaping cancer care led by the university itself along with local firm CannonDesign.
Late last month it was announced that the AbbVie Foundation, a nonprofit from the famed pharmaceuticals company, would be donating $75 million towards the new $815 million facility. Because of this, the center will now be named the AbbVie Foundation Cancer Center. Once completed the structure will reach eight-stories and 172-feet in height.
With 575,000 square-feet of space, the Y-shaped structure will consolidate the university’s current cancer operations. Inside it will hold a 10,000 square-foot radiology center, innovation center, imaging rooms, wellness center, breast cancer center, 80 inpatient rooms that include 16 ICU beds, a pharmacy and plenty of back of house rooms.
Additionally there will be 90 exam and infusion rooms including for outpatient services, an urgent care clinic, as well as spaces for clinical trials, community, and educational uses. With the ability to be expanded, the massive center is on track to finish construction by the end of 2026 and be fully open in the first half of 2027.
