The concrete core is rising from the foundation at the University of Chicago’s state-of-the-art Cancer Care center on its Hyde Park campus. The University and general contractor Turner Construction received a foundation permit on December 12 of last year. The “core and shell” permit issued May 9 of this year authorized them to build the core seen in the photos, which will rise nine stories in total, including one below grade.
Addressed by the building permits as 5644 S Drexel Avenue, the cancer center is an 875,000-square-foot facility designed by CannonDesign. Ground was broken in September of 2023; opening for treatment is anticipated in Spring 2027.
Adjustable Concrete is the concrete contractor. They are utilizing two tower cranes for the build.
UChicago Medicine visitors and patients have access via the seven-story Parking B garage next to the new cancer center. Those using public transit are within one block of stops for the #2 Hyde Park Express, #4 Cottage Grove, and 192 University of Chicago Hospitals Express buses.
