The Committee on Design has reviewed plans for the mixed-use expansion of the Black Ensemble Theater (BE) at 4427 N Clark Street in Uptown. Dubbed ‘The Free To BE Village’ and located across the street from the theater’s current building, the new development will replace a one-story commercial building and surface parking lot. Developed by the theater itself, they have contracted a design group made up of Nia Architects, Gensler, and Site Design Group for the work.

The Chicago Plan Commission has approved the mixed-use development at 375 N Morgan Street in Fulton Market. Also located at the address of 901 W Kinzie Street, the project will sit directly behind the Guinness Open Gate Brewery and replace a vacant lot. We recently covered the proposal when its application was submitted last week, now it has received its approval and developer LP Holdings 375 LLC can proceed with the Hartshorne Plunkard Architecture-designed tower.

The Committee on Design has reviewed the mixed-use development at 935 E 63rd Street in Woodlawn. Located on the intersection with S Ingleside Avenue and replacing a block-long vacant lot, the project was the winning entry of the Department of Planning and Development’s Woodlawn RFQ earlier this year. Dubbed ‘Woodlawn Social’, the proposal is being led by a team made-up of Tandem Ventures, KMW Communities, and POAH with KoningEizenberg and HED Architects as the designers.

Groundbreaking Held For Emmett Till House Museum And Creation Of National Monument

A groundbreaking for the Emmett Till House Museum was held this week along with the establishment of a national monument in his honor across the South Side. The museum will be located at 6247 S St. Lawrence Avenue in West Woodlawn, while the multi-state monument will include the Roberts Temple Church Of God in Christ at 4021 S State Street in Bronzeville. Both projects are expected to educate a wider audience of Till’s story and promote development of the surrounding areas.

Initial Financing Hearing Held For 400 N Lake Shore Drive In Streeterville

An initial public hearing was held for the potential financing of the first phase of the residential development at 400 N Lake Shore Drive in Streeterville. Held by the Illinois Housing Development Authority for the project under its formal address of 462 E North Water Street, the proposal looks to redevelop the long vacant site originally meant for the canceled Chicago Spire. Now developer Related Midwest appears to be resuming its work for their multi-phase plan designed by SOM.
