Cladding is closing in on completion for a new eight-story building located at 1140 W Erie Street in West Town. Dubbed “Inspire West Town,” this mixed-use project is set to house 113 rental apartments atop ground-level commercial space. Developer Bond Companies has planned for 23 total affordable units, six residences will be on site with the other 17 subsidized units within the surrounding area.

Exterior renovations can be seen making progress at the Museum of Science and Industry (MSI) at 5700 S Lake Shore Drive in Hyde Park. At the northern end of Jackson Park, just northeast of the now-underway Obama Presidential Center, this Beaux-Arts edifice is originally known as The Palace of Fine Arts, built for Chicago’s World Columbian Exposition in 1893. The building was designed by Charles Atwood for the Chicago-based firm D. H. Burnham & Co, originally founded by Daniel Burnham and John Root. Standing as a centerpiece to the original exposition plan, the structure was the only one within the fair grounds to utilize a brick substructure underneath its plaster facade.
Wrapping up 2021’s year-end countdown is the 101-story St. Regis Chicago, anchored prominently at 375 E Wacker Drive along the Chicago River. Formerly known as Vista Tower and Wanda Vista Tower, this glassy Lakeshore East goliath has been planned by Magellan Development Group and will be managed under St. Regis Hotel and Resorts (subsidiary of Mariott). The height of the tower has been reported as several different figures, including 1,196 and 1,198 feet, though planning documents appear to indicate 1,191 feet as the most precise measurement from the Riverwalk to the architectural pinnacle.
Parking lot demolition and excavation has begun for a new nine-story commercial addition at 732 W Randolph Street, located just west of the Kennedy Expressway in Fulton Market District. Acosta Ezgur is the developer behind the planned structure, which would integrate with a pair of mid-rise buildings adjacently east. The shorter of the two at 730 W Randolph Street is a six-story historic landmark that houses both office and retail. Just east is the 12-story 720 W Randolph Street, which contains condominiums and flexible commercial space. Combined, the planned addition and the two existing structures have been dubbed “Randolph Office Center.”
