Dearborn Station, also known as Polk Street Depot, is one of the remaining central stations in Chicago. This Printer’s Row passenger hub was once notably taller, featuring a distinctive steep pitched roof. In this seventh Lost Legends article, we will discuss the changes in the station over its 140-year history, including the fire that resulted in the loss of the additional structure.
Construction at 5251 N Kedzie Avenue in North Park has received approval for a full building permit that was filed by Chicago Kedzie Self Storage LLC. This five-story, climate-controlled structure will replace what is currently a vacant lot.
Preliminary facade work can be seen at North Wells Capital’s 16-story, mixed-use building located at 311 W Huron Street in River North. This structure, which now stands 226 feet tall, is primarily designated for office spaces, with Spins set to occupy 48,000 square feet within the top three floors.
A second permit has been issued for a residential project at 6044 N Winthrop Avenue in the Edgewater neighborhood, replacing the existing surface parking lot. The property, under development by North Park Ventures, will be developed into a five-story structure providing both retail and residential spaces. The scope envisions 60,000 square feet of space, accommodating 64 residential units and 35 parking spaces.
Core construction is now underway at 1257 W Roosevelt Road in Little Italy, under development by Related Midwest in partnership with the Chicago Housing Authority. The six-story mixed-use project represents one of the four buildings within the Roosevelt Square Phase 3B development, which will include new mixed-income residences, retail, and the new National Museum of Public Housing. Roosevelt Square as a whole is set to provide 2,441 total units, taking on the form of both multifamily and single-family buildings.
