CTA debuts the new Damen Green Line station on Chicago’s Near West Side

Monday, after years of planning, delays, and, ultimately, construction, the CTA opened the new Damen Green Line L station at Damen Avenue and Lake Street on Chicago’s Near West Side. The station, approved in 2017, features lots of green, a pedestrian bridge between the inbound and outbound sides of the platform offering a spectacular view of the Chicago Skyline, and a mosaic art installation by local artist Folayemi Wilson in the atrium-style entrance lobby off Damen Avenue.

Construction progress at 3951 North Wayne Avenue in Lake View has graduated to walls and bricks. The apartment building that replaces a now-demolished Burger King restaurant got started back in April, on its way to delivering 31 new rental units to the north end of the Wrigleyville neighborhood.

Construction is in progress for a pair of condominiums at 1436 West School Street in Lake View. The new building replaces a multi-unit two-story home, built in 1890, that previously occupied the site. That property received its demolition permit in March and was quickly dispatched.

Fast transition at 840 West Lill Avenue, as foundation work takes over for demolition

Just two weeks after we saw demolition work getting started at 840 West Lill Avenue in Lincoln Park, foundation work for the new building has already begun at the site. Built in 1860 and apparently torn down in about the same number of minutes, the old edifice gives way to the new 1840 West Lill, a three-story with basement, two-unit luxury condominium building designed by Michael Cox and Associates and developed by Pro-Homes.

Demo permit issued for 1891-built single-family home at 1836 West Addison Street

A 2,240-square-foot single-family home at 1836 West Addison Street in North Center received a demolition permit from the City of Chicago on August 1. That clears the way for a new rental property to be built on the site. Real estate sites show the home, built in 1891, was listed in March of this year and was on the market for only 73 days. Listed for $1.1 million, it closed in June for $1,025.000.

A two-story frame residence at 1448 West Diversey Parkway in Lake View is getting two new leases on life. While many buildings its age in Chicago are being demolished, this two-unit, 143-year-old structure is not only getting rehabbed, it’s also getting a new addition.

1723 South Michigan rises above street level

The apartment building at 1723 South Michigan Avenue is going vertical in the South Loop. Thanks to the efforts of GC Brandts Build, with assistance from concrete contractor Goebel Forming, work on the future 12-story structure has reached the second level.

Construction work continues at 919 West Belden Avenue in Lincoln Park for a two-unit condo building. The Halcyon Development Group effort will offer a duplex-down on the first floor and basement, and a duplex-up on the second and third floor.

Hyde Park Labs crane removal the only change in Chicago’s August tower crane count

Chicago’s tower crane count to begin August 2024 took a slight dip from July, now that the machine that building Hyde Park Labs has been taken down. That leaves eight cranes in the air as summer continues. There is one pending permit, and it’s for Google’s Thompson Center renovation in The Loop.
