Chicago’s loftiest tower crane has reached its full height. The long saga of 400 Lake Shore’s sixth and final tower crane jump has finally come to a safe conclusion. The last segments were lifted to the top of the tower and put in place Sunday February 1st, completing a task that began three weeks ago.
The first windows have been installed on the south end of the residential construction at 629 West Lake Street in the West Loop. Soon, the palletized windows stacked just inside the outer walls will be added to the facade as well.
A construction permit issued by the City of Chicago on January 30 will allow the Chicago South Side Birth Center to build a new facility at East 83rd Street and South Shore Drive in South Chicago. Assigned to the address of 8301 South South Shore Drive, the permit’s application is dated May 23, 2025, and it came with a reported cost of $6.8 million.
A nearly 150-year-old frame residence at 1821 West Haddon Avenue in East Village received a permit from the city this month to convert its basement into an Additional Dwelling Unit. A private owner applied for the permit on December 2 of last year, and it came through on January 26 under the City of Chicago ADU Pilot Program with a reported cost of $25,000.
A prolific development team of small residential projects has received another permit to build a two-story plus basement, two-unit building at 726 North Lotus Avenue in the Austin neighborhood. GT Alternatives LLC applied for the permit on November 7, and it came through after a two-and-a-half-month wait with a reported cost of $350,000. Peter Sterniuk is the homes’ designer, as he’s been for several previous buildings with GT Alternatives.
