Funding Secured For Community Center And School In West Town

New funding has been secured for the Esperanza Community Services center at 520 N Marshfield Avenue in West Town. Located just west of the intersection with W Grand Avenue, the funds will go towards the repair and maintenance of their existing multi-building campus. The grant was just approved last month and is coming from the Community Development Program, part of the city’s pandemic recovery initiative which gave money to 80 other proposals.

Funding Secured For National Public Housing Museum In Near West Side

New funding has been secured for the National Public Housing Museum at 925 S Ada Street in the Near West Side. The project is part of the greater Roosevelt Square Plan which includes various residential developments led by Related Midwest and the Chicago Housing Authority. The museum itself will be one of the first of its kind and occupy around 2/3rds of a larger shared building with 15 residential units. The funds will help kick-start construction on the proposal designed by the Chicago based firms of HED Architects and Landon Bone Baker Architects.

Updated details have been revealed for a community arts center at 1353 E 72nd Street in Greater Grand Crossing. Located just west of the intersection with S Dorchester Avenue, the project will rehabilitate the previously abandoned St. Laurence Catholic School which has sat vacant after past redevelopment plans failed. The creative force behind the new art-focused spaces is the Rebuild Foundation led by Theaster Gates who is well known for his Stony Island Arts Bank project. Woman-owned Muller 2 known for their O’Hare Terminal 5 extension are serving as the architects, while Power & Sons as the general contractor.

The sale and potential demolition has been announced of the Epworth United Methodist Church at 5253 N Kenmore Avenue in Edgewater. Located just south of the intersection with W Berwyn Avenue, a little east of Foster Beach and the lakefront, the church has stood in this spot since its completion in 1891. News on its sale recently broke to the congregation who hosted their last service within its walls this past Sunday, after a last-minute estate-sale in order to part ways with surplus items. The church is the latest in a long string of historical structures in danger of demolition for new developments.

Initial Funds Approval Granted For New TimeLine Theater In Uptown

Initial Tax Increment Financing (TIF) approval has been granted for the new location of the TimeLine Theater Company at 5033 N Broadway in Uptown. Located just north of the intersection with W Argyle Street, near the CTA Red Line Argyle station which is undergoing renovation, the new arts center will utilize the bones of an existing five-story building while erecting a new facade. The theater itself is developing its new home which received City Council approval late last year and has been owned by the company since 2018, TimeLine is working with local architecture firm HGA on the design that borrows elements from the current structure.
