The Chicago City Council has approved a new wellness center at 2933 W Division Street in Humboldt Park. Located on the intersection with N Richmond Street and across the street from the neighborhood’s namesake park, the new facility will replace an empty lot and three-story residential building while utilizing the existing adjacent parking lot. Developer Humboldt Park Health recently received approval from the Chicago Plan Commission on the JGMA-designed structure.

The approved rezoning from RS-3 Residential Single Unit to C1-2 Neighborhood Commercial District will allow for the 348,897-square-foot lot to be replaced by a three-story, 45,500-square-foot sports and wellness center. The approval comes right after another health center from ASI Home Care was announced on the same campus along with a nearby nine-story approved affordable housing project. The new 62-foot-tall twisted structure will employ roughly 60 new part- and full-time workers operating across the three floors which will cater towards the 54,165 residents in the area.

The ground floor will feature a corner entrance, lobby, 6,400-square-foot pool space, locker rooms, kids club, and sports medicine area. The second floor will focus on exercise with an 8,500-square-foot open fitness area, a mind/body studio, group exercise room, group cycle room, and a track that follows the building perimeter. The third floor will have a large gathering space, two lecture rooms, restrooms, and a 1,600-square-foot community room that opens to a large outdoor terrace with a green roof.

Future visitors will be able to access the facility with CTA bus Route 70 directly at the entrance of the building, and Route 94 via a five-minute walk. The $24 million project will utilize roughly 164 vehicle parking spaces of the existing adjacent parking lot, and the approval will allow it to move forward towards an eventual groundbreaking sooner rather than later.
