741 N Wells Street Claims 19th Spot In Year-End Countdown

Coming in at the 17th spot in this year’s countdown is the mixed-use development at 741 N Wells Street in River North. Located just south of the intersection with W Chicago Avenue, the project replaces a one-story commercial building that previously held a furniture store and was demolished to make way for the quickly growing Wells Street canyon. Developer Vista Property Group, who recently proposed 640 W Randolph Street in West Loop Gate, used the same team from Antunovich Associates on this design as well.

630 S Wabash Avenue Claims 24th Place In Countdown

Climbing into the 24th spot of Chicago YIMBY’s countdown is the mixed-use development at 630 S Wabash Avenue in the South Loop. Revealed in 2021, the tower replaces a vacant lot sandwiched between two low-rise buildings and is rising adjacent to 30 E Balbo Drive, which was completed a few years back on the nearby intersection. Development partners Melrose Ascension Capital and DAC Developments are working with local architects Antunovich Associates on its design, adding to the growing South Loop skyline.

15-Story Mixed-Use Tower Proposed for 640 W Randolph in West Loop Gate

Plans have been unveiled for a new 15-story mixed-use tower at 640 W Randolph Street in West Loop Gate. Vista Property Group intends to replace a surface parking lot with the new 225-foot-tall structure at the intersection of Randolph and Desplaines. There will be a total of 117,000 square feet of office space atop 2,500 square feet of ground-level commercial space.

1044 W Van Buren Nears Completion, Snags 28th Spot in Year-End Countdown

Coming in at a height of 195 feet, construction is nearing completion for 1044 W Van Buren Street in West Loop, marking the 28th spot in Chicago YIMBY’s year-end countdown. The 18-story apartment building is being developed by Tandem and will house a total of 196 for-rent units.

Initial Permits Issued For Mixed-Use Development At 566 W Van Buren Street In West Loop Gate

Initial demolition permits have been issued for the mixed-use development at 566 W Van Buren Street in West Loop Gate. Located on the northeast corner with S Jefferson Street, the new structure will replace a large surface parking lot along with two existing commercial buildings dating back to the 1890s. Led by co-developers Riverside Investment and Blue Star Properties, the project is being designed by Antunovich Associates who worked on the recently completed 609 W Randolph Street nearby in a similar industrial style.

Dead By Design #7: Old Chicago Post Office Redevelopment

The penultimate addition to our Dead by Design series of cancelled Chicago projects is a gargantuan 2011 proposal oriented around the nine-story Old Chicago Post Office. The original post office was a smaller mail terminal designed by Graham, Anderson, Probst and White. Having completed in 1921, the Art Deco structure was expanded in 1932 to bring its total square footage to 2.5 million square feet. While shuttering its mail operations in 1996, the building was inducted into the National Registry of Historic Places in 2001, then would be sold by the city to Bill Davies of International Property Developers in 2009 for $24 million.

741 N Wells Street Begins Ascent in River North

In a week of similar milestones, construction has gone vertical for 741 N Wells Street, a 21-story mixed-use development in River North. The 201,000-square-foot development by Vista Property will yield a total of 168 apartment units atop a ground-level retail component. The project will also preserve a two-story masonry building situated directly to the north.

Topped-Out 1044 W Van Buren Street Makes Headway in West Loop

With cladding not far behind, structural work has now topped out for 1044 W Van Buren Street, an 18-story mixed-use high rise along the southern edge of West Loop. Previously a two-story masonry building, the site is being developed by Tandem, whose plans call for a total of 196 for-rent apartments atop a ground-level retail component.

Yesterday, developer VISTA Property Group and its general contractor, Skender, broke ground on a new mixed-use high rise at 741 N Wells Street in River North. The 21-story, 201,000-square-foot development will yield a total of 168 apartment units. Located prominently at the corner of Chicago Avenue and Wells Street, 741 N Wells is one of the latest developments adding to the neighborhood’s recent uptick in construction.
