City Celebrates Two Years Of Invest South/West

The City of Chicago and Mayor Lori Lightfoot are celebrating two years of the Invest South/West initiative across the city. The program launched in 2019 with $750 million in public funding for projects across 12 commercial corridors in 10 south- and west-side communities aimed at creating jobs, improving safety, and providing housing options. With many winners announced in the last two years, the projects have also spurred plenty of private developments in areas being reinvigorated by the program.

SPLAM Timber Pavilion Prototype Completes at EPIC Academy in South Chicago

This week, Chicago YIMBY had the opportunity to tour a new construction prototype known as SPLAM (short for “SPatial LAMinated timber”), built as part of the 2021 Chicago Architectural Biennial. The single-story piece is located at EPIC Academy’s South Shore campus in South Chicago. The exact address for the project is 8255 S Houston Avenue, the same address as EPIC Academy.

Claretian Associates Inc. is the filing owner, whose plans comprise of two dwellings atop a basement level. Much of the construction has already taken place, with the main exterior frame having been built in 2008 under a now-voided permit.

Claretian Associates Inc. is the owner behind the projects, whose plans indicate two units and a basement. The building was already partially complete, with the shell and core built in 2008 under a separate permit. This other permit had been filed by a separate owner and was originally meant to house just one unit.
