Illinois Health Review Board Approves UChicago Cancer Center In Hyde Park

The Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board has approved the new medical building at 5654 S Drexel Avenue within the University of Chicago in Hyde Park. Sitting on the intersection with E 57th Street and replacing a surface parking lot, the new building will be the first free-standing cancer pavilion in the city. The university and UChicago Medicine are behind the proposal which is being designed by local firm CannonDesign.

Plan Commission Approves Jackson Park Improvements

The Chicago Plan Commission has approved new improvements to the east end of the Midway Plaisance at 5950 S Stony Island Avenue in Hyde Park. This small portion of the park is now within Jackson Park due to the Obama Center construction, with the redesigned Women’s Garden on the east and the Metra Electric line elevated tracks to the west. The project is being led by the Chicago Park District with Site Design Group serving as the designers, with five community meetings leading to the current proposal.

Located north of the intersection with E 57th Street, the new center will replace one of the last remaining open spaces occupied by a parking lot within the existing hospital complex. Proposed by the university and designed by local firm CannonDesign, the project builds on the recently started Harper Court Phase 2 nearby as the institution continues to grow its medical and life sciences departments.

The proposed facility, which was announced in February 2022, has undergone significant changes since then, including an increase in size and cost. The revised proposal now includes a total area of 575,000 square feet and an estimated cost of $815 million, up from the original estimates of $633 million and 500,000 square feet.
