Development Commission Approves TIF For Residential Development In East Garfield Park

The Community Development Commission approves Tax Increment Financing (TIF) for a residential development at 414 N Central Park Avenue in East Garfield Park. TIF is a publicly financed subsidy for local developments and is being applied for by developer Conservatory Apartments LLC. Designed by HED Architects, the project will replace a vacated parking lot for the former Laura Ward Elementary School which shuttered in 2013.

The Community Development Commission has approved a supportive housing development located at 3346 W Carroll Avenue in East Garfield Park. Currently a vacant lot, the project site is an infill site along W Carroll Avenue, just off of N Homan Avenue. The property backs up to the westbound Metra tracks. Breakthrough Urban Ministries, a local nonprofit organization, will be developing the building.

Plans have been submitted to the city for the C40 Garfield Green development at 201 S Kedzie Avenue in East Garfield Park. Located on two parcels at the intersection of S Kedzie Avenue and W Fifth Avenue, the adjacent sites will both be corner properties. The development will replace vacant city-owned property as the winning proposal of the C40 Reinventing Cities competition. Preservation of Affordable Housing is the developer behind the proposal.

The Chicago Plan Commission has approved plans for a new school and athletic facility located at 731 S Washtenaw Avenue in East Garfield Park. Spread across two acres of land, the project site is bound by W Harrison Street to the north, the Union Pacific rail lines to the east, W Taylor Street to the south, and S Washtenaw Avenue to the west. Chicago Hope Academy and Chicago Lions Charitable Association are collaborating on the proposal.
