Dead by Design #1: Waterview Tower in The Loop

Chicago’s formative architectural history is not always visible if one were to walk around. Much like the city’s dozens of demolished high rises (more on that later), the never-built can also influence the realm of architecture despite lacking a physical presence. That is why every Sunday leading up to Halloween, YIMBY will cover a cancelled tower of increasing height, what lead to its demise, and what it might have looked like on the skyline. The model screenshots will retain previous weeks’ towers, though they will not be carried over to standard posts.

The Reed (234 W Polk Street)

Construction Tops Off For The Reed In South Loop

Core construction has reached its full height for a 41-story, 440-unit tower known as “The Reed” at 234 W Polk Street in South Loop. Developed by Lendlease, the tower is the second residential building within Lendlease’s seven-acre Southbank master plan. This project has also added public amenities to the area including two acres of park land and a riverwalk running alongside the Chicago River’s south branch.

166 N Aberdeen Street Reaches 16th Floor in Fulton Market District

Structural work has reached the 16th floor of a 21-story mixed-use building at 166 N Aberdeen Street in Fulton Market District. Developed by Greystar, the 241-foot high rise will be primarily apartments atop ground-level retail space. The current construction marks the second phase of a two-part scheme, whose first installment is the 11-story mixed-use building directly across Aberdeen Street.

The Reed at Southbank

Facade Work Begins on The Reed at Southbank

Metal paneling, glass, and painted concrete are all now visible for The Reed at Southbank, a 41-story residential building rising at 234 W Polk Street in South Loop. Developed by Lendlease, Southbank itself refers to a larger four-building masterplan that split off from CMK‘s planned Riverline development just to the south. This Southbank masterplan also comes with an extended stretch of Riverwalk and a small urban park located in its center.
