Full Permits Issued for RIU Plaza Hotel at 150 E Ontario Street in Streeterville

Full permits have been issued for the RIU Plaza Hotel Chicago at 150 E Ontario Street in Streeterville. Located just east of the intersection with N Michigan Avenue, developer The Prime Group broke ground on the new tower earlier this year, replacing an empty lot. The property will be run by Spain-based RIU Hotels and is being designed by local architecture firm Lucien LaGrange Studio, who recently merged with Lamar Johnson Collaborative.

Dead by Design #2 – Waldorf-Astoria Hotel and Residence Tower in Streeterville

Next in our procession of unbuilt Chicago skyscrapers is the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel and Residence Tower, a 107-story supertall that would have been located along North Park Drive, less than a block from the river in Streeterville. Compared to existing Chicago structures, if built, the mixed-use project would have been the third tallest in the city with a 1,265-foot height. More broadly, if it were built at the time of its proposal in 2007, it would have been the seventh tallest in the world. The Prime Group in partnership with Fordham Co. had planned for a three-year construction timeline starting in 2009 and wrapping up in 2012.

150 E Ontario Street Receives Foundation Permit in Streeterville

A foundation permit has been issued for the planned 150 E Ontario Street, kicking off the first high rise to be built in Streeterville in several years. Filling in a long-vacant patch of land within an otherwise dense downtown segment, the new construction will be a 28-story hotel for the Spanish hotel chain RIU Hotels and Resorts. The Prime Group is the developer for this proposal, having also contributed $2.9 million to the Neighborhood Opportunity Fund alongside the project.

State Signs Sale Of Thompson Center In The Loop

The State of Illinois has officially signed a contract selling the Thompson Center at 100 W Randolph Street in The Loop. The controversial but architecturally significant building located on the corner with N Clark Street will now receive a multi-million dollar renovation that will forever change its appearance and use. The winning bid for the center came from the Prime Group headed by Michael Reschke with JAHN Architects, the firm of the center’s original architect Helmut Jahn, leading the design efforts for the renovation.
