The sale and potential demolition has been announced of the Epworth United Methodist Church at 5253 N Kenmore Avenue in Edgewater. Located just south of the intersection with W Berwyn Avenue, a little east of Foster Beach and the lakefront, the church has stood in this spot since its completion in 1891. News on its sale recently broke to the congregation who hosted their last service within its walls this past Sunday, after a last-minute estate-sale in order to part ways with surplus items. The church is the latest in a long string of historical structures in danger of demolition for new developments.

Plan Commission Approves Residential Development At 5356 N Sheridan Road In Edgewater

The Chicago Plan Commission has approved a new residential development at 5356 N Sheridan Road in Edgewater. Located on the southwest corner with W Balmoral Avenue, the new project will replace an existing two-story house most recently holding the Wing Hoe Restaurant and its surrounding parking lot. Arkansas-based developer Tempus Group Holding, LLC is working with 2R/Z Architecture on the design for the lakefront-adjacent lot that recently changed hands from its original developer, MCZ, who proposed a similarly dense building back in 2018.

Initial plans have been revealed for an affordable residential development at 5853 N Broadway in Edgewater. Located just south of the intersection with W Thorndale Avenue, the project would replace an existing one-story masonry building and its parking lot adjacent to the Broadway Armory community center. The current structure is utilized by the Streets and Sanitation Department, who will vacate the property. Local developer Bickerdike Redevelopment Corporation is working with Landon Bone Baker Architects on the design of the new mid-rise.

CTA Planned Art Pieces for New Red Line Stations in Uptown and Edgewater

The CTA has revealed that they are seeking to partner with artists on the CTA’s Red-Purple Modernization Project. Officials state they are looking for help designing a total of six pieces which will later be installed throughout the Red Line stations in both Uptown and Edgewater. The Red Line stations at Lawrence, Argyle, Berwyn and Bryn Mawr have all been undergoing construction, with temporary stations at Argyle and Bryn Mawr. These stations are being refreshed as part of a $2 billion overhaul on the Far North Side.
