City Council Approves TIF For Various City Parks

The Chicago City Council has approved the financing for multiple small-improvement projects of various Chicago Park District properties across the city. A majority of the funds will come from various Tax Increment Financing districts, which are often supported by fees from developers. Many city parks are dealing with aging facilities while handling the demand for open space over the last two years. The investments will affect eight city parks, with six of the smaller projects being as follows:

Initial Details Revealed For 31st Street Beach Facilities In Bronzeville

Initial details have been revealed for the redevelopment of the public areas of Margaret T. Burroughs Beach at 3100 S DuSable Lake Shore Drive in Bronzeville. Most commonly known as 31st Street Beach, the updated plans come after a multi-year delay on the project which will tie in with the adjacent harbor. The redevelopment is being led by the Chicago Park District who is working with local firm Site Design Group on the new structures that will benefit from The Bronzeville Lakefront megadevelopment.

Initial Renderings Revealed For Skate Park Renovation In Logan Square

Initial details have been revealed for the redesign of the existing skatepark at 2430 W Logan Boulevard in Logan Square. Located right under the Kennedy Expressway, the existing skate park is one of five operated by the Chicago Park District and the only one that operates year-round due to its covered nature. The extensive remodel and redesign is being led by community group Logan Boulevard Skate Park Committee who tapped LA-based Spohn Ranch Skateparks for the conceptual design.

Recently Started Obama Presidential Center Claims 21st Spot In Year End Countdown

Claiming the 21st spot in YIMBY’s year-end countdown is the Obama Presidential Center in Jackson Park. The Obama Foundation recently broke ground on its cultural campus centered around the 219-foot-tall museum tower designed by Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects and landscape architecture by Michael van Valkenburg Associates.

Plan Committee Approves New Sporting Facility In Lake View

The Chicago Plan Committee has approved a new golf practice area at 3701 N Recreation Drive in Lake View. Located inside of Waveland Park behind the 1931 English Gothic style field house and carillon tower, the new outdoor facility is the second phase of a larger project which included renovations to the clubhouse. The course sits on land that belongs to the Chicago Park District‘s Sydney R. Marovitz Golf Course, who have been partners of the project since the beginning.

Obama Foundation Breaks Ground on Presidential Center In Jackson Park

The Obama Foundation has formally broken ground on the new Obama Presidential Center in Jackson Park. Located between S Stony Island Avenue and S Cornell Drive, from E 59th Street to E 62nd Street, the center will bring a variety of community engaging programs to the South Side upon its 2025 opening. The monumental day was filled with celebration featuring Mayor Lori Lightfoot, Governor JB Pritzker, as well as the namesake Michelle and Barack Obama, bringing the end to a multi-year legal battle between the organization and local residents who have fought to preserve the park’s current design.

Parks District Opens New Visitor Center At Big Marsh Park In South Deering

The Chicago Parks District has opened a new visitor and nature center at Big Marsh Park in South Deering. Located at 11555 S Stony Island Avenue, the new center marks a major milestone for the South Side park with a 297-acre size that rivals Grant Park and is one of the largest properties in the urban park district.

Plan Commission Approves Restoration of North Pond Nature Sanctuary in Lincoln Park

The Chicago Plan Commission has approved a restoration of the North Pond Nature Sanctuary in Lincoln Park. Located between N Cannon Drive and N Stockton Drive, the project looks to preserve the existing north pond which was built in the mid-1880’s. Notable sites on the North Pond include the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum and Michelin-starred North Pond Restaurant.

Plan Commission Approves Renovations to Clarendon Community Center at 4501 N Clarendon Avenue in Uptown

The Chicago Plan Commission has approved the renovation plan for Clarendon Community Center at 4501 N Clarendon Avenue in Uptown. Located in Clarendon Park, the community center is located at the intersection of N Clarendon Avenue and W Sunnyside Avenue. Chicago Park District is leading the development.
