Plans Revealed For Two New West Side Grocery Stores

Plans have been announced for two new grocery stores in Austin and North Lawndale. The effort comes from two local entrepreneurs who see the value in providing healthy food in areas considered food deserts up as recent as the last decade, the two stores will potentially be located at an old Salvation Army Building located at 5713 W Chicago Avenue in Austin developed by Liz Abunaw and 628 S Pulaski Road in North Lawndale developed by Albert Peterson.

City Celebrates Two Years Of Invest South/West

The City of Chicago and Mayor Lori Lightfoot are celebrating two years of the Invest South/West initiative across the city. The program launched in 2019 with $750 million in public funding for projects across 12 commercial corridors in 10 south- and west-side communities aimed at creating jobs, improving safety, and providing housing options. With many winners announced in the last two years, the projects have also spurred plenty of private developments in areas being reinvigorated by the program.

Invest South/West Winner Announced For 4300 W Roosevelt Road RFP In North Lawndale

The City of Chicago and Mayor Lori Lightfoot have announced the winner of the latest Invest South/West RFP at 4300 W Roosevelt Road in North Lawndale. The currently empty site is roughly bounded by W Roosevelt Road to the south, S Kostner Avenue to the west, W 5th Avenue to the north, and S Kildare Avenue to the east. The winning proposal comes to us from developer partners 548 Developments and Related Midwest who are working with Lamar Johnson Collaborative, Ware Malcomb, and Site Design Group on the project’s design.

City Council Approves Affordable Housing Project In North Lawndale

The Chicago City Council has approved an affordable mixed-use development at 3401 W Ogden Avenue in North Lawndale. Located on the southwest corner with S Homan Avenue, the new building replaces an existing flat parking lot used by the nearby police station. Dubbed ‘Grace Manor’ the project is the product of a developer venture between East Lake Management and Jerusalem CDC with local architecture firm JGMA as the designer.

City Announces Winners Of We Rise Together Grant

The seven winners of the We Rise Together grant have been announced across the south and west sides in predominantly Black and Latino communities. The $6.7 million grant is the result of a program from the Chicago Community Trust that began in 2020 as the pandemic disproportionately affected communities of color and is aimed at assisting the areas recover. Learning from the recession, the winners range from small businesses to new construction representing the resilience of all Chicago’s neighborhoods.
