Permits Issued for New CPS School Building at 244 E Pershing Road in Bronzeville

Construction permits have been issued for a new annex addition to the Wendell Phillips High School, located at 244 E Pershing Road in Bronzeville. Planned by the Public Building Commission of Chicago, the building will mainly serve as a new gymnasium, and will replace an existing surface parking lot on the northeast corner of the campus. The existing structures on the campus include a landmarked three-story brick building from 1904, as well as other two buildings built in 1937 and 1944.

Located as part of the larger Roosevelt Square plan, the project is part of the redevelopment of the former CHA ABLA Homes. Spread across four parcels, the sites include 1002 Racine Avenue, 1257 W Roosevelt Road, 1357 W Roosevelt Road, and 925 S Ada Street. Related Midwest is the developer behind the entire plan, partnering with the Chicago Housing Authority.

The Permit Review Committee has approved a proposed addition to Wendell Phillips High School at 244 E Pershing Road in Bronzeville. Located near the Giles-Calumet Landmark District, the school campus is bound by E 38th Street to the north, S Giles Avenue to the east, E Pershing Road to the south, and S Prairie Avenue to the west. The Public Building Commission of Chicago is the developer behind the proposal for Chicago Public Schools.
