Project Round-Up: Construction And Funding For Racine Blue Line And Homeless Shelter In Garfield Park

In a round-up of smaller projects; a construction contract has been awarded for renovations to the CTA Racine Blue Line station and funding has been announced for a veterans shelter in Garfield Park. The CTA station is located at 430 S Racine Avenue just east of the Illinois Medical District and runs in the center of the highway below. The shelter will be located at 4941 W Chicago Avenue and repurposes an existing building to provide much needed resources to military veterans experiencing homelessness.

Initial Funding Approved For Red Line Extension

The Chicago City Council has approved funding for the CTA Red Line Extension across the South Side. In the works for nearly 50 years, the extension would bring much needed transit from the current terminus of the line at 95th Street all the way down to 130th Street near Altgeld Gardens by Lake Calumet. Hoping to spur new economic development and connect more people to the city center, the project is being spearheaded by the CTA with help from Muller 2 Architects who also worked on the O’Hare Airport Terminal 5 expansion.

Permits Issued for New CTA Green Line Station at Damen Avenue and Lake Street

Permits have been issued for the upcoming Green Line CTA station located at 2001 W Lake Street in the Near West Side. YIMBY previously reported on the upcoming stop which will service the growing west side area, as well as the nearby United Center. The project has experienced several setbacks in the timeline mainly due to budgeting issues. The station was announced in 2017 and was originally planned to open in 2020.

Renderings have been revealed for a rebuilt State/Lake CTA L Station in The Loop. Located at the intersection of W Lake Street and N State Street, the station connects numerous CTA L Lines including the Green, Brown, Purple, Orange, and Pink Lines. Connections to the Red Line and multiple bus lines are also possible at this location. Built for the Chicago Transit Authority, the CTA is collaborating with the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) on the project.

PRC Approves Lawrence CTA L Station Reconstruction as Part of Red-Purple Modernization in Uptown

The Permit Review Committee, a subcommittee of the Commission on Chicago Landmarks, has approved the reconstruction of the Lawrence CTA L Station. Located in the Uptown Square District, the development is part of the CTA’s Red-Purple Modernization (RPM) project. The current station is located along W Lawrence Avenue between N Clifton Avenue and N Winthrop Avenue in Uptown.
