After decades of sitting idle amid hopes for adaptive reuse, the Damen Silos are being torn down at Damen Avenue and 29th Street in McKinley Park. Long a favorite for urban explorers and rave parties, the silos had become a popular landmark along the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal and the Stevenson Expressway.
The Chicago Community Development Commission has approved TIF funds for the mixed-use redevelopment of part of the Central Manufacturing District on the southern edge of McKinley Park. Located at 1769 West Pershing Road, near the neighborhood’s namesake park, the two-building project has been in development for several years.
Initial details have been revealed for a new mixed-use development called ‘Bridgeport Crossing’ at 3301 S Justine Street in McKinley Park. Bound by W 33rd Street to the north and nearly reaches W 34th Street to the south, the large industrial site sits just west of Bubbly Creek and the border with neighboring Bridgeport.
The City of Chicago has issued a pair of permits to build adjacent homes at 3303 and 3305 South Seeley Avenue in McKinley Park on the southwest side. Both permits were released on January 22, and they are identical. Developer and general contractor A & SL Construction will build them, at an estimated cost of $350,000 apiece.
