Landmark Status Proposed for Historic Pioneer Arcade in Humboldt Park

A proposal was submitted for review on Wednesday to the Chicago City Council to designate the historic Pioneer Arcade in Humboldt Park as a protected landmark. The three-story building is located at 1535-45 N Pulaski Road and was designed by Danish-born Chicago architect Jens Jensen. Pioneer Arcade was originally a recreation center and featured 20 bowling lanes, a billiard room with 35 tables, and retail spaces. The establishment acted as a social site for the neighborhood. The building has a distinctive Spanish Baroque Revival style and an ornate terra cotta facade.

Initial permits have been approved for the mixed-use development at 1203 N California Avenue in Humboldt Park. Located on the northeast corner with W Division Street, the upcoming structure received foundation permits and will replace a vacant lot across the street from the neighborhood’s namesake park. The team at the locally based Hispanic Housing Development Corporation are leading the project with Chicago-based Pappageorge Haymes Partners working on its design.

Initial Funding Approved For Mixed-Use Development At 3831 W Chicago Avenue In Humboldt Park

The Chicago Community Development Commission has approved initial funding for the mixed-use development at 3831 W Chicago Avenue in Humboldt Park. Located just east of the intersection with N Pulaski Road, the new structure will replace an empty lot and three masonry industrial buildings that currently occupy the space. Led by 548 Development who is working on similar projects through the Invest South/West initiative, the proposal is being designed by local firm Lamar Johnson Collaborative with the community in mind.
