Construction is underway on the affordable housing development at 1237 North California Avenue in Humboldt Park. The Hispanic Housing Development Corporation, a nonprofit developer, is building a six-story, 40-unit building here featuring one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom floor plans. The site had been vacant since 2019, when the former La Casa Puertorriqueña Puerto Rican community center was demolished.

General contractor Path Construction broke ground on the project in August. Created by DesignBridge, the building will feature ground-floor amenities including bicycle storage, a laundry room, a community room, a business center, office spaces, a conference room, and a welcoming lobby. Of the 21 total parking spaces planned, 14 will be located inside the ground-floor garage accessed from the alley off Crystal Street. The other seven spots will be outside.

The nearly 58,000-square-foot development sits directly across from Humboldt Park, at the corner of California Avenue and Crystal Street. Residents will be within a one-block walk of CTA bus service via Routes 70 and 94. While there are no nearby elevated train options, the Route 70 bus can be used to connect to the Division Blue Line subway station about a mile and a half east.
