Related Midwest hosts groundbreaking ceremony for 400 Lake Shore skyscraper development

Related Midwest hosted a groundbreaking ceremony on Monday, June 17, at the construction site of 400 Lake Shore, their new two-tower residential development in Streeterville. Repurposing the former Chicago Spire site, the 72-story North Tower is currently under construction; the South Tower will follow. The North Tower will deliver 635 residential units, with 20% of them set aside as affordable.

Eight tower cranes dot Chicago’s skies to begin June 2024

Chicago has eight working tower cranes across the city as the month of June begins. They’re located as far south as the 6600-block of S Dr Martin Luther King Drive in Woodlawn, but barely reach north of the Chicago River, with the furthest northern crane working in the 400-block of N Jean-Baptiste Pointe DuSable Lake Shore Drive.

Photos Show Concrete Pour for 400 Lake Shore Drive in Streeterville

The construction of 400 Lake Shore Drive in Streeterville has recently advanced with a significant concrete pour, involving 250 truckloads delivering nine million pounds of concrete. The 72-story, 858-foot-tall tower is currently the tallest building under construction in the city and will be built on the site of the canceled Chicago Spire project. This first phase of a dual-skyscraper development by Related Midwest will span 1.1 million square feet and house 635 apartments, including 127 affordable housing units. Skidmore, Owings & Merrill’s Chicago office is leading the building’s design, with input from architect David Childs and the interior design by MAWD. The exterior features an interpretation of the iconic “Chicago Window” and incorporates a metal and glass facade with various setbacks, resulting in a distinctive sail-like shape.
