The Chicago Spire cofferdam, idle since 2008 after the 150-story skyscraper’s construction came to a halt, is getting a bit of a hair cut. Thanks to 400 Lake Shore, the 72-story residential tower now being built on the site, the top “ring” of the cofferdam is being excavated and removed as part of the new tower’s foundation.
Crews were seen last week on the site excavating sand and soil from around the cofferdam, then cutting through the steel and concrete of the structure itself, to remove the top layer in sections. Work will continue the entire way around the circle until the top tier has been removed.
With the addition of the tower crane to the job site, it was a very active week for developer Related Midwest and its general contracting division LR Contracting. This is just one small step towards completion of the new skyscraper, with an anticipated opening early in 2027.

what’s happening to the rest of it? are they burying it? or can it somehow be used to support the new buildings?
It is being incorporated into the foundation of the North Tower currently under construction…Daniel
I would be very curious to see how this foundation from The Spire can be “integrated” into the new foundation. Fascinating.
