The single-story masonry building at 1230 West Fulton Market has been permitted for demolition. Formerly the home of Four Star Foods, who closed up shop and moved to Heart of Chicago a few years ago, the building is on the site of the future 1200 West Fulton development from Fulton Street Companies and JDL Development. That project received approval from the Chicago Plan Commission in October of last year.

Heneghan Wrecking is named as the demolition contractor in the permit, with the home address of Skender Construction shown as the site’s owner. The vacant building has been slowly crumbling in the five-plus years it has sat vacant. Recent efforts had been made to prevent access to the building, which had become a playground of sorts for taggers and graffiti painters. It is not clear if the building is being torn down because of imminent new construction, or if it’s being removed for safety reasons.

Another one-story building, the former Pace Bus paratransit CDT facility that stood next door at 1200 West Fulton, was demolished in 2023. On the south side of the street, the former Revel event space at 1201 West Fulton was torn down in February along with 218 North Racine Avenue, ahead of another major redevelopment for the Fulton Market District.

Curious if anyone here might know why there was such a large gap in time with 1200’s demo permit and 1230’s. Why weren’t they demoed at the same time, feel like that would make a lot more sense logistically
