Taking the sixth place in this year’s countdown is the RIU Plaza Hotel Chicago at 150 E Ontario Street in Streeterville. Located just east of the intersection with N Michigan Avenue, the project came in ninth place in last year’s countdown as it replaced an empty lot. Developer The Prime Group worked with local architecture firm Lucien LaGrange Studio on the hotel which will be operated by Spain-based RIU Hotels.

Rising 28 stories and 345 feet in height, the structure occupies the entirety of its site, abutting the two surrounding buildings. Within the Neoclassical-style tower will be 388 guest rooms aimed at foreign tourists as RIU offers full vacation packages across Europe. The ground floor will contain a coffee shop and lobby while the second floor will hold a dining area for breakfast.

  1. Need a ton of these similarly styled all along Chicago Ave filling in the parking lots and low-rise buildings.

  2. People love to hate a concrete or masonry neoclassical building when the renderings drop, but are silent when it actually turns out to be very nice, textured infill. Goof for Riu.
