A groundbreaking has been held for the residential development dubbed Sarah’s on Lakeside at 4737 N Sheridan Road in Uptown. Located on the northeast corner with W Lakeside Place not too far from the lakefront, the upcoming structure will replace a vacant lot near other properties operated by the same developer. That being non-profit organization Sarah’s Circle who is working with global architecture firm Perkins + Will on its design.
Sarah’s Circle has been dedicated to serving women experiencing homelessness or in need of a safe space since 1979, recently being visited by global delegations to learn from their programs. Their two existing Uptown centers are crucial for the area with 41 percent of the over 800 women served a year being chronically homeless, and 45 percent survivors of domestic abuse. With the goal of expanding their reach, the new facility will rise five stories and 64.5 feet tall clad in a mix of red masonry and gray paneling.
On the ground floor will be a large multi-use space with a demonstration kitchen, offices, and restrooms, with additional space for staff and case managers as well as a computer lab and outdoor terrace on the second floor. The rest of the building will hold 28 Single Room Occupancy (SRO) units averaging 350 square feet and come fully furnished including a private kitchen, a shared laundry room will also be available on each floor. Rent will include utilities, access to common areas, and the unit with a twin bed and other basic pieces.
Approved back in 2021 with an estimated completion date in 2023, the project is now moving forward with a total cost of $16 million. This is being covered by $4 million from the Department of Housing, $3.85 million from IHDA, $3.1 million in funds from the upcoming 4600 N Marine Drive, along with other sources. Powers & Sons Construction will perform the work with an estimated 18-month completion date.
