The Chicago City Council has approved plans for a new hotel at 6402 South Stony Island Avenue in Woodlawn. Located at the corner of East 64th Street, the project was initially revealed earlier this year before receiving Plan Commission approval late this summer. Now, developer Aquinnah Investment Trust has secured the final approval needed.

Designed by architecture and engineering firm Stantec, the hotel is planned to rise 26 stories and 316 feet tall—down from its original 336-foot proposal. The tower will be anchored by a four-story podium containing a large multi-story lobby, along with a 118-vehicle parking garage accessed from Stony Island Avenue.

The podium will be topped with a large outdoor deck featuring a pool, cabanas, and a grilling area, all connected to an indoor amenity space. Above this will be 250 hotel rooms, aimed at serving visitors to the Obama Presidential Center and the University of Chicago. Guests will also have access to additional amenity spaces on the 13th floor, as well as a rooftop terrace.

The project is expected to include multiple food and beverage options, though details have not yet been revealed. It is also unknown whether the hotel will be part of, or collaborate with, a major hotel chain. The overall development is expected to cost around $100 million. At this time, no funding source or construction timeline has been announced.

      • Hey Niklas,

I think the Obama Center is often referred to as just Obama for short. Doesn’t always mean the president himself.
