Additional details have been revealed for the larger Imani Village development at the intersection of South Cottage Grove Avenue and East 95th Street, within the Pullman area. Located just east of Chicago State University, the large multi-phase village is being led by Trinity United Church of Christ, with work already underway.

Meaning “faith” in Swahili, Imani Village will span 35 acres, which the church purchased for $7.65 million over five years, according to Crain’s. Earlier this summer, the first of two senior housing buildings went up on the site. The five-story structure includes 70 units along with on-site services. It will eventually be joined by a second, 63-unit building.

However, the church has a much more ambitious vision for the rest of the site. Later phases call for an 87,000-square-foot urban agriculture center, a 45,600-square-foot athletic center, a 63,000-square-foot food hub and commercial space, a hotel, and roughly 60 residences made up of townhomes and single-family homes. There will also be a small manufacturing center.

This manufacturing center will occupy the former steel distribution warehouse on the northern end of the site. It will be redeveloped, in partnership with Inherent L3C, into a modular home construction facility aimed at training local residents and supporting Inherent’s mission to build affordable housing across Chicago.

Previous plans for the village also called for additional apartment buildings and homes on the site; however, it is unclear if those are still included. The over $100 million project will also include ample parking. At the moment, no further details are known about the build-out of the rest of the project, with the second senior building expected to be next on the docket.

It is worth noting that the development will benefit from the upcoming 95th Street Metra station redevelopment, as well as Chicago State University’s planned campus expansion next door.

Thanks for providing this description of the planned project in Pullman. Also, CTA and CDOT is advancing plans alongside the transportation equity network for Bus Priority Programming along Cottage Grove Street with a Round 1 in November and a regional virtual session on December 8th.
