An opening timeline has been announced for the fully renovated Clarendon Community Center at 4501 N Clarendon Avenue in Uptown. Sitting near the intersection with W Montrose Avenue, we last covered this project in 2022 as it scored all of its $13 million in funding. Now after nearly two years in the making, the center will reopen to the public this spring.
Having faced a few delays from its original 2023 opening date, the 1916-built structure was originally a bath house for the surrounding park before receiving its last major face lift in the 1970’s to convert it into a field house. Now, it will take on a new life with local firms Booth Hansen and Site Design Group having worked on its updated interiors and grounds.
The structure originally included four towers which were removed in that 1970’s renovation, leading to a leaky roof which was the first fix of the new renovation. It also received a new entry ramp, front plaza, community garden, facade restoration, and various structure repairs. This all features additional seating and general ADA improvements like an added elevator.
The inside of the structure also saw major improvement, the lobby was expanded with new design elements, the restrooms were all renovated, and a new train shop was added for the model train room. Almost all of the existing community, exercise, and activity rooms received upgrades focused around their uses; a more in-depth breakdown can be found in our 2022 article.
Funding for the project came from the Montrose/Clarendon Tax Increment Financing (TIF) district pool, $1.4 million from developer contributions, and $1.5 million from the Chicago Park District. Currently a formal opening day is unknown, but work is wrapping up ahead of the expected spring completion.

The model trains rock! Highly recommend taking one of the train club’s free tours.
