The Robert R. McCormick Leadership and Economic Opportunity Center has topped out on concrete, and now awaits its second phase of construction. This three-story, 85,000-square-foot facility at 6623 S Martin Luther King Jr. Drive is bringing a multi-use community center to the Woodlawn neighborhood.

A development by Project H.O.O.D. and Related Midwest, the Leadership and Economic Opportunity Center will hold a multitude of facilities for the community, including an auditorium and theater, a gymnasium with indoor swimming pool, classrooms and meeting spaces, plus ground-level restaurants. BNMO Design is the project’s architect.

General contractor LR Contracting and concrete contractor Goebel Forming have topped out the concrete work on the block-long center. The next phase of construction will include erecting steel beams and the roof. According to Pastor Corey Brooks, founder of Project H.O.O.D., this next step should begin soon, pending the backorder of the steel fabrication. “Exciting progress is on the horizon as we prepare to erect the steel beams and roof for our new center,” said Pastor Brooks. “Despite the steel fabrication being on backorder, we anticipate beginning this crucial phase in the next two to three weeks.”

The $35 million community center got a big boost with a $1.25 million grant from We Rise Together: For an Equitable & Just Recovery, a funders collaborative supporting thriving local economies and a stronger Chicago. Construction began after breaking ground this past fall. The 24-36 month estimated timeline for completion will have the center open to the community by the end of 2025 at the earliest.

Community members and visitors to the Opportunity Center will find stops for the Route 3 bus in front of the facility. The King Drive Green Line station is a three-block walk north.
