Additional funding has been awarded for After School Matters’ new location at 1065 N Orleans Avenue in the Near North Side. The project will redevelop an existing school building that was most recently the home of Architectural Artifacts before it relocated to Texas. The project is being designed by local firm Eckenhoff Saunders.

Located on the intersection with W Hill Street, the 36,000-square-foot building will become the largest location for the nonprofit which launched in 1991. The facility will focus on various training and educational programs for teens, including the possibility to earn a stipend while participating in job training for various disciplines.

The majority of the space will be remodeled in a multi-colored palette with metal mesh screens and plywood accents. Inside will be a new black-box theater, renovated gym, an expanded industrial kitchen for classes, art studios, STEM labs, a wood shop, and outdoor gardening space. The design was made with input from teens in the program.

Groundbreaking of new facility via After School Matters

After School Matters currently serves around 19,000 teens per year, with the new location hoping to expand capacity by 1,500. The project costs around $27 million, including the building acquisition. With a fair amount already raised via fundraising and grants, the city just approved $5 million in additional funds via its Community Development Grant initiative.

Construction has commenced and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

  1. Everything seems to be happening in Ald Burnett’s ward.

That guy needs to run for Mayor!

Actually, I take that back. Better for him to stay Alderman where all of the development is happening

  2. Maybe he should take over the second ward as well and get rid of hopkins

  3. Great use for this building!

  4. Finally good news with development!

Great decision to contribute more to the construction of the After Schools Matter building. For years, the organization has been a blessing to Chicago youth and families.
