Demolition is underway on an L-shaped school building at 1310 South Ashland Avenue on the city’s Near West Side. The former home of Moses Montefiore School until 2016, and later Urban Prairie Waldorf School until its closing in June, the one- and two-story buildings are being cleared away to create space for a new residential development. The demo permit for the school was issued on August 21, with Heneghan Wrecking carrying out demo work.
We’ve been watching permits trickle in for 1310 South Ashland since mid-August. A total of eight new construction permit have been issued to the Domus Group so far, all for three-story, six-unit buildings. Four of them will line West Hastings. and four will sit side-by-side along West 13th Street. We’re still waiting on two pending permits, for 1302-06 South Ashland, and 1318-1322 South Ashland. Each of these will be for a three- and four-story building with 12 units and 2,500 square feet of commercial space apiece.
Axios Architects designed the new buildings, and Morgan Street Development is listed on the permits as the general contractor. Foundation work has already begun for the four permitted buildings along Hastings Street, as they are located outside the footprint of the school structures.
