If you listen closely, you can still smell the faint remnants of cinnamon gravy, but aromas and memories are just about the only things left of the Ann Sather building at 909 West Belmont Avenue in Lake View. When we visited the site on Saturday, little remained of the structure, which was permitted for demolition on July 10, but the front wall and sides as Brophy Excavation continues to raze the property from the rear forward.

A large pile of bricks in the parking lot out back awaits salvage, with many more still be to torn down and added to the heap. Metal remnants have also been sorted, ready to be scrapped. Once the rest of the building comes down, excavation will begin on the second phase of the Belmora residential project from Mavrek Development, the first phase of which is in progress next door, just a few steps from the Belmont elevated train platform. A permit (as 917 West Belmont) for five stories and 46 units has been pending in the Chicago Data Portal since June 6. Once that’s issued, Mavrek will perform their own general contracting duties, just as they are on the first building.

In all, Belmora will deliver 92 dwelling units and more than 9,000 square feet of retail space. First-phase apartments are expected to open before the end of the year.
