Initial details have been revealed for a new mixed-use facility for the Illinois Basketball Academy at 1800 W Lake Street in the northern edge of the Near West Side. Bound by N Wood Street to the east and N Wolcott Avenue to the west, the block-long structure will be replacing a one-story commercial building and a large vacant lot.
The Illinois Basketball Academy is currently a suburbs-based organization that offers competitive basketball teams and instruction for boys and girls K-12th grade, while also offering training for college and pro-players. The academy offers its programs across multiple Chicagoland locations, now bringing them to the city in a new two-story building.
The long and skinny structure will have its main entrance along Wood, this will be housed in a double height glass-clad cube with an IBA logo. Inside there will be a small concessions space, a restaurant with a patio lining most of Wood, restrooms, a classroom, and back of house spaces on the first floor.
Behind these will be one NBA sized court as well as 10 slightly smaller courts for training programs and a lounge space, all within a double height metal structure. The second floor by the entrance will have a small office area and a large multi-use space that overlooks the courts with an outdoor terrace for events.
Currently not much else is known about the project nor a timeline for construction.
