Renovation work on the Thompson Center in The Loop continues, as more of the curved façade facing Randolph and Clark Streets has been stripped of its original cladding. The building’s transformation into Google offices has it looking a little bare and exposed at present; new triple-paned glass being used to replace the façade will aid in a more efficiently heated and cooled facility.

The Prime Group purchased the Thompson Center from the state, and they have a deal in place with Google to purchase the building once renovations are complete. The rehab is expected to be complete, with Google employees beginning to move in, some time in 2026.

Clark Construction is the acting general contractor on the build; a tower crane will be added to their equipment list late this month, with a permit having been issued back in early July.

Do we know what Google will be doing with their current west loop headquarters once this is complete?
For now, they plan to expand to the Thompson Center while maintaining their offices on Fulton.
I read that they’re going to turn it into cold storage.

I still say, that the Chicago Bears missed out on a stadium opportunity, by not using the Thompson Center.

How tf is a stadium supposed to fit on this site?
The current length of the playable field exceeds the site of Thompson. That doesn’t allow for any additional seating whatsoever.
You would need 4 city blocks to fit a stadium within the loop. And I’m not about to Urban Renewal the Loop in exchange for a failed sports team.

Gonna miss the unique salmon and teal as its replaced with contemporary Millennial color palette of Puritanical Minimalist white, gray and generic curtain wall like every other building of the last 20 years.
This building (without a full rendering) might be a great building. It has potential.
This has the promise of excitement.
I know I am supposed to be happy about this. But they have taken all the life out of this building. Now it is a just a Google building in the shape of the old State of Illinois Building. I was a kid when it opened and it reflected the exuberance of the post modernism of that era and Jahn’s sense of color and play. His work got blander with old age and this relects that. It’s sad. Maybe one day it will ge restored back.
