The restaurateur first opened the restaurant nearby in 1991, moving to the current location in 1999 before expanding to a second location over the years. Now Campos is ready to expand her offerings and has partnered with Oak Park-based Aria Group Architects to construct a four-story and nearly 50-foot tall building on the existing site.

Its ground floor would hold a new space for the restaurant and a new cultural center showcasing Colombian culture, music, art, and history as she has done within the restaurant till now. There would also be 19-parking spaces in the rear to support the 18-residential units on the upper floors. These will be made up of one- and two-bedroom layouts ranging from 900 to 1,100 square-feet in size.

Of the unit total, four would need to be considered affordable per city requirements, and all apartments will have access to private balconies. The structure will be clad in cast stone and brick, with space for potential murals on the front. With a total cost of $9.5 million, the team has applied for rezoning as well as city grants for funding.

The development team hopes to commence work this coming spring and open the first floor restaurant by the end of 2025, with the remainder of the structure opening soon after in 2026.

  1. too bad the architecture doesn’t address the historically rounded corner which is a gentle but emphatic gesture to the corner…..far better than the pastiche mural which will inevidently look tacky upon execution.

  2. Gross. Inelegant and charmless.

  3. What on Earth.

God Bless. Good for her! She does not have her hand out for TIF money like all the rich out of town developers!
Let her build what she wants. She has been there for over 30 years! How long have the complainers been there?
Why do people and the City give small business owners such a hard time.

    • Agreed.

    • People are nostalgic for a time when low paid artisans could produce nice architectural work on the cheap. That time hasn’t existed since the great depression. To produce the type of work people want, only millionaires and billionaires would be able to afford to live there. Maybe with technology, we will be able to produce the design that people love and that is also affordable. Until then, we should temper expectations and advocate for changes that lead to walkable rich environments in our city. This project helps. Perhaps it could have addressed the corner a bit better, but it is still a step towards a richer neighborhood.
