Lake View Lutheran Church, at 835 W Addison Street in the Lake View neighborhood, received a demolition permit from the City of Chicago on May 31. That allows for the development of a 37-unit affordable apartment building, dubbed Lakeview Landing, to be built on the site.
While the demolition permit came through just before the end of May, a new construction permit was issued back in December of 2023. And now that demolition work can officially commence, the six-story, 69-foot-tall replacement building can get started. All 37 apartments here will be considered affordable units, and all will be one-bedroom and 575 square feet in size. An express permit was issued in April, changing ownership of the new development to Lakeview Landing, LP.
The ground floor will include a garage with 12 parking spaces and a meeting room where the church will resume gathering. (For now, church members are meeting at Resurrection Lutheran Church, at 3309 N. Seminary Ave in Lake View, and on Zoom.) The upper five floors will contain the residences.
Weese Langley Weese is the design firm behind Lakeview Landing. The construction permit names Power & Sons Construction of Gary, Indiana as the general contractor. Quality Excavation is listed as the demolition contractor in the wrecking permit. As of June 2, no demo fencing has gone up around the building yet.
Residents of Lakeview Landing will be within one block of CTA bus service for Routes 8 and 152. Route 36 is available three blocks to the east. Three blocks to the west is the Addison L platform, serving Red and Purple Line trains.

Fascinating, nimbys will protest beautiful well designed high rises but no one is protesting THIS.., I hate to say but abandoned church looks so much better than this new building..
To demolish this church for that, even when the new project is necessary and needed, is a travesty. Just take design cues from the church – Weese Langley Weese is capable of so much better, and has done much better in the past.
There is nothing I understand about the exterior design or color pallet. If you refer to earlier articles, the building will provide afforable housing and support to people with disabilities. They are going to great lengths to give people in need a wonderful home and future, so why make it look like an airport motel?
Spare us of the royal blue, please.
The new building is as funny today as the old building is funny today…..
(head shaking)
Knowing many churches from that era, the building was probably in poor condition. It’s not a great loss.
In what world do affordable-housing tenants drive EVs?
Damn, your bias is showing. Also, it’s a city/state requirement for parking to be EV ready.
