Revised plans have been revealed for the Lake Street Lofts at 910 W Lake Street in Fulton Market. Located on the northwest corner with N Peoria Street, the multi-story structure was originally set to be incorporated into the 919 W Fulton development next door. The new plan which calls for a hotel conversion is still being led by Fulton Street Companies with Weldon Development Group and SNK Capital.

Rising six stories in height, the brick clad structure was built in 1886 with a heavy timber structure. It predominantly served as an industrial center having been built as a factory for the Schwinn Bicycle Company, eventually being redeveloped into 89 loft apartments and 15,000 square feet of ground-floor retail space. This conversion was designed by local architecture firm FitzGerald Associates.

When 919 W Fulton was announced the currently vacant building was set to become additional office space connected to the new structure via a glass-enclosed lobby. However that plan was scrapped and the developer reverted to lofts as 919 W Fulton began construction. It has now been announced that it will become the newest location of Drift Hotels.

Owned and operated by TMC Hospitality, the Drift brand claims to be within walking distance to everything with locations in Palm Springs, Santa Barbara, Nashville, and San Jose del Cabo. Its current lofts will be converted into 140 hotel rooms, as one of the few hotel projects in the growing market seeing similar returns to 2019 levels.

The proposal includes a rooftop bar and restaurant as well as a ground-floor workspace according to Crain’s. Overall the project will cost roughly $75 million and will require zoning approval from the city if it is to move forward. A timeline is currently unknown for the conversion at 910, with the adjacent 919 W Fulton scheduled to be completed next year with a potential new Equinox gym location on site.

  1. With the housing shortage that we have, not really a fan of swapping residential for a hotel. That being said, considering how much housing is supposed to be coming online in the West Loop/Fulton Market area, maybe it won’t be so bad.

  2. The building should be saved.

  3. 910 and 919 are not next door to each other .
