With the exterior removed, significant renovations are underway at 679 N Michigan Avenue along Magnificent Mile. The structure was formerly an Apple Store, then subsequently the canvas for a mural titled “Rapt on The Mile” by Nick Cave and Bob Faust. This third chapter for the four-story building will be a retail redevelopment by Nick Canellis and will span four levels. According to an article by Crain’s Chicago Business, H&M will be the occupying tenant.

The scope of the work is extensive, replacing nearly all of the building’s components. The new design by Hirsch MPG includes a new storefront system on Michigan Avenue and Huron Street, a floor opening on the second level, changes to the basement exit stair, and an internal three-story stair for improved accessibility. Renderings of the renovated interior and exterior could not be found.

For public transportation, bus service for Routes 2, 3, 10, 26, 125, 143, 146, 147, 148, 151, and 157 is available within a short distance. The CTA Red Line can also be accessed at the Grand Station, a nine-minute walk southwest.

  1. Wow, 840 Michigan can’t catch a break. They lost Topshop/Topman, Uniqlo, and Columbia all during the pandemic, and H&M’s departure will leave Verizon as the only tenant on the entire block.

With Macy’s gone across the street at Water Tower, things aren’t looking good for that stretch of Mag Mile.

I thought I read somewhere that 840 was looking to clear out to sell the building as a tear down. Not sure what 111 E Chestnut is going to have to say about that.

  2. Verizon closed as well

  3. Yea 840 is clearly a coordinated tenant boot. Verizon is already out as well. Something big is going down there. Hopefully IKEA is bringing their city mall concept to Chicago. That building would be a perfect shell.

  4. Imagine 840 torn down but the land only redeveloped into a public park/plaza perhaps with some sort of elevated seating type arrangement? Would be cool and help ease up the walking congestion that still occurs there through the water tower area.
