Facade Approaches Completion for The Study at University of Chicago

Facade work is nearing completion at The Study at University of Chicago, a 13-story hotel located at 1227 E 60th Street along the southern end of the University of Chicago campus.

The New York-based developer Hospitality 3 has planned the 155-foot-tall project in partnership with The University of Chicago. The hotel is now one of four within the developer’s Study Hotels brand. Oriented around the idea of integrating with nearby campuses, the brand’s other three installments include of The Study at Yale (New Haven), The Study at University City (Philadelphia), and The Study at Johns Hopkins (Baltimore).

The new hospitality development will house 167 rooms, each of which will offer a leather reading chair, a large work desk, and expansive floor-to-ceiling windows. Guest amenities comprise of a tavern and restaurant, 4,700 square feet of conference space, and a Winter Garden venue meant to accommodate events and celebrations.

Holabird & Root is responsible for the contemporary design, whose podium is clad in granite and metal paneling. The upper floors, meanwhile, are enveloped in a mix of glass and glass fiber reinforced concrete of different colors.

The hotel is located just across from Midway Plaisance Park, and is situated between the recently completed David Rubenstein forum to the west and The Keller Center to the east. Guests will be within a two-minute walk of the central campus area, and will also find various nearby transportation options for easy access to the downtown and other parts of the city. Buses can be found for Routes 2, 171, and 172 within a minute’s walk of the site via the intersection of 60th Street & Woodlawn. Additional buses within a five-minute walk comprise of Route 192 to the north and Route 59 to the east. For the CTA L, Green Line service can be found via a 19-minute walk southwest to Cottage Grove station, while the nearest Metra service is at University of Chicago/59th St station via a nine-minute walk to the northeast.

J.T. Magen Co & Inc. has served as general contractor for the $55 million construction. An opening date is anticipated for this coming fall.

  4. It has taken approximately 65 years for the University of Chicago to have big footed there way into Woodlawn for the University of Chicago.
    Didn’t trust them in 1947 and I’ve lived long enough to see the Big Lie.
