Demolition of early post-fire building at 720 N Wells Street continues in River North.

207 West Superior is already gone. Now, 720 North Wells is meeting the same fate, as demolition of the two structures continues in River North. Dating back to the 1870s, the three-story brick and cast-iron building at 720 N Wells Street “slipped through the cracks” of Chicago’s survey of historically significant buildings, according to Preservation Chicago’s Ward Miller in this Chicago Tribune story about the demolitions.

Preservation Chicago Reveals 2023’s Most Endangered Buildings List

This year’s most endangered buildings list has been announced by Preservation Chicago featuring influential structures across the city. In its 21st year, the list covers multiple buildings that are at risk for demolition which have contributed to the city’s architectural and cultural legacy. Preservation Chicago has released its yearly list of the most endangered buildings in Chicago for 2022 spanning multiple neighborhoods. In its 20th year, the list outlines eight buildings at risk for demolition in the city that contribute towards the architectural legacy seven of the city announced by the director of Preservation Chicago Ward Miller.
